Tips for Caring for Leather Couches

Leather furniture is among the most stylish of all furnishing that you can buy. This kind of leather sofas are greatly desired both for its class and for the simplicity of its look. Therefore, how do you take care of your valuable leather furniture?

Here are tips for caring for your leather couches:
  • The most important tip for leather care is to avoid direct sunlight on your furniture. The sun's ultraviolet rays will cause the color to fade. Leather can also tighten up from exposure to sunlight, which can cause the surface to crack and tear. If you place your sofas in an area that gets a lot of sun at certain times of the day, make sure you have curtains or blinds for shade.
  • Do not use furniture polish or any product containing waxes or silicone on your leather sofa because it may damage the leather and leave it sticky. Therefore, be very careful when using pledge, or any other type of furniture polish, around your leather. Also, avoid using baby wipes or any other alkaline cleaner on your leather couch as it may damage the finish.
  • Leather does occasionally need to be replenished. Simply, mix one cup of distilled white vinegar with two cups of linseed oil. Shake well and apply to leather in broad circular motion. Let it sit for about 10 minutes, then polish and make shiny using a soft cloth. A second polish may be necessary.
  • When you have a spill, clean it immediately. Leather is porous and if any liquid is allowed to penetrate the surface, the stain will be extremely difficult to clean. Never rub or scrub any spot as you may scratch and fade the spot making it seem worse than the spill itself.
  • Leather furniture will blister or crack open if you let it sit in front of the heater or fireplace. To avoid these problems, place your sofa where it will never be in direct contact with the fireplace. Leather furniture will sometimes darken as it dries out beside a fire or heater appliance. These are not problems that cannot be cleaned off.
Note: Before you part with your hard-earned money and the furnishing wears out several months later, here are tips when buying home furniture.
